Pinsker, Simhah

(1801-64)
   Galician scholar. He was born in Tarnow. He was the founder of the first successful modern Jewish school in Russia, in Odessa in 1826. He accumulated a collection of ancient Hebrew manuscripts, several of which were examined and described by the Karaite scholar, Abraham Firkovich on a visit to Osessa. Eventually Pinsker moved to Vienna, where he published a history of Karaism and Karaite literature. He later returned to Odessa.
